On The Move Mechanical Repairs Car Air Conditioning Auto Facts

A loss of refrigerant through leaks or natural evaporation can reduce your air conditioner’s performance, causing the system to work harder and potentially increasing fuel consumption.

That’s why it’s important to have your car air conditioning system checked for signs of leaks, worn rubber seals or other issues that could lead to refrigerant loss. On The Move Mechanical Repairs also performs a basic air conditioning system check with every vehicle service, helping identify potential problems before they become more costly.

A simple maintenance tip for every driver is to run the air conditioning for a few minutes each month, even during cooler weather. This helps keep the system operating regularly and can help identify changes in performance early.

Regular car air conditioning servicing can help prevent unexpected breakdowns, maintain passenger comfort and reduce the risk of unwanted build-up within the system. A well-maintained air con system can also operate more efficiently, helping you save money in the long run.

On The Move Mechanical Repairs cares about the environment and holds Arctick Authorisation (AU34159) to responsibly carry out automotive air conditioning regas, repairs, servicing and inspections.

When your car struggles to start on a cold Melbourne morning, there’s a good chance the battery is losing performance. Your vehicle’s battery is one of the hardest working components under the bonnet, powering everything from the starter motor and ignition system through to modern electronics, safety systems and accessories. At On The Move Mechanical Repairs in Preston, the team provides professional car battery supply, installation and testing services for passenger vehicles, SUVs and 4X4s, helping local drivers stay reliable on the road year-round

As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre, On The Move Mechanical Repairs stocks a range of popular Century Batteries with a 30 month warranty for same day supply and installation. Specialty batteries can also be ordered and fitted the same day, subject to availability. Whether your vehicle needs a standard battery replacement or a battery designed for heavy electrical loads and off-road touring, the workshop can recommend the correct option for your driving needs and vehicle specifications.

If your vehicle is becoming difficult to start or your battery is more than three years old, contact On The Move Mechanical Repairs in Preston for professional battery testing, supply and installation. The team can help you choose the correct battery for your vehicle and provide reliable servicing to keep your car running smoothly in Melbourne conditions.

Book Your Battery Test or Replacement Today

Your battery supplies the electrical power needed to start the engine and stabilises voltage throughout the vehicle. Even after the engine starts, the battery continues supporting the alternator by helping power accessories such as headlights, entertainment systems, electric windows, central locking, navigation systems and charging ports.

Modern vehicles rely heavily on stable voltage. A weak or failing battery can create a range of problems including:

Many drivers assume a battery will simply fail without warning, however batteries often show gradual signs of deterioration before they stop working altogether.

Cold weather in Melbourne can place additional strain on vehicle batteries, especially during winter mornings. Lower temperatures slow down the chemical reactions inside the battery, reducing its ability to produce power. At the same time, the engine requires more effort to start because engine oil thickens in colder conditions.

This combination means an ageing battery may struggle to crank the engine efficiently during winter. Batteries that already have reduced capacity due to age or internal wear are far more likely to fail during cold weather.

Short trips around Preston can also contribute to battery issues because the alternator may not have enough time to fully recharge the battery between starts. This is particularly common in vehicles used mainly for school runs, local commuting and stop-start suburban driving.

How Melbourne’s Cold Weather Affects Car Batteries

If your car has become harder to start, On The Move Mechanical Repairs offers free battery testing for customer convenience. Professional battery testing can identify whether the battery is healthy, undercharged or approaching failure before it leaves you stranded unexpectedly.

The workshop also tests battery condition during every vehicle service. Regular testing is especially important for batteries over three years old, as battery performance naturally declines over time even if there are no obvious symptoms.

Battery testing checks several important factors including:

Early testing can often prevent inconvenient breakdowns and help avoid additional strain on the starter motor and charging system.

There are several warning signs that indicate your battery may be nearing the end of its service life:

What Are The Signs Your Battery May Need Replacing

If the engine turns over more slowly than usual, the battery may no longer be supplying sufficient power.

A clicking noise when turning the key or pressing the start button can indicate low battery voltage.

A battery warning light may indicate charging system issues or battery failure.

Dim headlights, weak air conditioning fan speed or malfunctioning accessories can all point to battery problems.

Heat and internal damage can cause the battery casing to swell, which means replacement is required immediately.

Whilst you can replace your battery yourself in many cases, be aware that Battery replacement is no longer as simple as swapping one unit for another. Many modern vehicles require specific battery types, battery registration procedures or memory retention during installation to protect sensitive electronics.

At On The Move Mechanical Repairs, the team ensures the correct battery is selected and installed properly for your vehicle. This helps protect electrical systems and ensures reliable starting performance.

Professional installation also includes:

Why Professional Battery Installation Matters

Safe removal and disposal of old batteries

Interesting Fact - Many people don’t realise that heat can actually damage batteries more than cold weather. High summer temperatures accelerate internal chemical wear and fluid evaporation, weakening the battery over time. Often the damage occurs during summer, but the symptoms only become noticeable when cold winter mornings arrive.

While battery replacement is an important service, On The Move Mechanical Repairs also provides comprehensive vehicle servicing and maintenance for local motorists in Preston. As a trusted Repco Authorised Service centre, the workshop offers professional servicing for new and older vehicles, helping maintain reliability, safety and manufacturer warranty requirements.

From routine servicing and diagnostics through to brakes, suspension, cooling systems and electrical repairs, local drivers can rely on the experienced team for honest advice and quality workmanship.

When it comes to maintaining your car, a radiator flush might not be the first thing on your mind. But understanding this simple procedure can keep your car running smoothly, especially during those warmer months. At On The Move Mechanical Repairs in Preston, we're here to help you navigate the essentials of radiator care.

Think of your car's radiator as its personal air-conditioning system, helping to regulate the engine's temperature. It prevents your engine from overheating, which is especially crucial when the mercury rises. Over time, your radiator can accumulate rust, dirt, and debris, much like dust settling on a bookshelf. These impurities can hinder your radiator’s ability to cool the engine effectively.

A radiator flush is akin to a spring clean for your car's cooling system. It involves draining the old coolant, flushing out the build-up, and refilling with fresh coolant. This ensures your radiator can function efficiently, safeguarding your engine from overheating, which is more likely to happen in warmer weather.

Wondering if it's time for a radiator flush? Keep an eye out for these common signs:

Overheating Engine: If your temperature gauge consistently climbs into the red zone, it’s a clear indication that your radiator might not be doing its job properly.

Leaking Coolant: Puddles of bright green, orange, or pink liquid under your car can suggest a coolant leak, hinting at a need for a check-up.

Strange Noises: A grinding or knocking noise could mean that your radiator is struggling, possibly due to sediment build-up.

Rusty or Discoloured Coolant: If the coolant looks brown or rusty instead of bright green or orange, it’s a sign that your radiator is due for a flush.

At On The Move Mechanical Repairs, we can't stress enough the value of regular car servicing. Routine maintenance, including radiator checks, ensures your vehicle runs efficiently and safely. It not only prevents unexpected breakdowns but also saves you money in the long run by avoiding costly repairs.

By trusting your car with the experts at On The Move Mechanical Repairs in Preston, you can drive with peace of mind, knowing that your car is well-maintained and ready to face the road ahead. So, when was the last time your car had a radiator flush? If you’re unsure, maybe it’s time to pay us a visit. Let's keep your car cool and your journeys smooth!

Learn about radiator flushes, signs your car needs one, and why regular servicing is vital. Trust On The Move Mechanical Repairs in Preston to keep your vehicle in top condition.
